Objective and Curriculum of Palliative Medicine/Nursing
The objective of the Palliative Medicine/Nursing course is to train healthcare professionals (doctors and nurses) in Palliative Care and Management through a specially designed course curriculum. The duration of the course will be 1 month and most of the learning process will be in patients’ homes and outpatient clinics. Skills like managing cancer pain through end-of-life care, nursing care in advanced illness and psychological management.
The curriculum is divided into four parts and will cover the following topics:
Part 1
- Introduction to Palliative Care
- Introduction to Pain
- Pathophysiology of Pain
- Classification of Pain
- Pain Assessment
- Fundamentals of Pain Management
- Introduction to Communication with the Patient
Part 2
- Advanced Communication Skills (aided by role plays such as - Breaking Bad News, Managing Collusion, etc.)
- Management of Pain: Non-opioids
- Introduction to Opioid Pharmacology, Opioid availability
- Difficult pain, Adjuvant Analgesics
- Nausea and Vomiting
- Constipation
Part 3
- Intestinal obstruction, Gastric outlet obstruction
- Ascites, hiccups
- Breathlessness, cough, pleural effusion
- Cachexia, anorexia
- Skincare, wound care, itching
- Lymphedema, Stoma care
- Oncological Emergencies in Palliative Care
- Psychosocial Issues in Palliative Care
Part 4
- The concept of a “good death and the last days of life
- Radiotherapy & Chemotherapy in palliative care

- “Other symptoms” based on patients’ problems seen during the course

Career Prospects
- On completion of the course, candidates will be able to practice as Palliative Care Physician or Palliative Care Nurse across hospitals and organisations caring for people with serious illnesses.
